CurriculumReligious EducationReligion classes are taught daily. Religious education in school is supplemental to the faith witness and example given by the parent/guardian(s) at home. All students are required to participate in religion classes, Masses, and Prayer Services. Students celebrate a grade level Mass and all school Masses each month. Parents/Guardian(s) are invited and encouraged to attend these liturgies which are planned by the children and the teachers. In addition to attending Mass, the children pray together in their classrooms and participate in celebrations such as Eucharistic Devotions, Stations of the Cross, retreats, and May Crowning. Children are also given opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Advent and Lent. Standard Program of StudyIn the elementary grades (K-6) the children study Religion, Mathematics, Language Arts (including reading, phonics, literature, oral and written composition, spelling, and handwriting), Science and Health, Social Studies, Spanish, Computer Education, Physical Education, Music and Art. The junior high program (grades 7-8) is directed toward the specific needs of the young teenager. The required subjects taught include Religion, Mathematics, Reading, English, Social Studies, Spanish, Science, Health, Computer Education, Physical Education, Music, and Art. In mathematics, we also offer an enrichment opportunity. Based on test scores and abilities, students are placed in either 7th grade math or pre-algebra, or 8th grade math or algebra. Texts are selected by the principal and teachers from lists approved by the State and by the Office of Catholic Education for the Diocese of Cleveland. Each grade level has various audio/visual aids to help in presenting the curriculum. Some of these aids include; computers, DVD players, CD players, televisions, and ACTIV-Boards. In addition, guest speakers are occasionally invited to speak in a particular classroom or at an assembly. Students in grades 1-3-5-7 are given the ITBS-CAT test in March and grade 1 students are tested in November. A writing test will be given to students in grades 3, 5, 7, and 8 in October. HomeworkA reasonable amount of homework will be given daily. The assignments will be a reinforcement of class work to supplement learning, to review independently what was taught in class and to provide an opportunity to use research skills. Time allotment for homework depends on the type of assignment and on the age and grade level of the student. Each grade level sets its own homework requirements with regard to the amount of homework given and how missing work due to absence is handled. No definite time limit can be determined for all since children work at different rates of speed. If parents feel the homework assignments are excessive, privately inform the teacher so an adjustment can be made if necessary. It is important that you also review the homework policies of the individual grade levels. Parent/Guardian(s) are responsible for providing a proper environment (quiet place/without distractions) for the completion of the homework. Checking regularly the completion of homework and supporting the teacher assigning the homework are beneficial to your child’s success. Please refer to your child's grade level policy regarding consequences in relation to incomplete homework. Parents can refer to EdLine to check for missing assignments at http://www.edline.net. |
